The great thing about Sassy is that their products are well-named and easier to differentiate from each other.  We will continue to add updates as they become available. Remember that these products will not be labeled as BPA and PVC free, because manufacturers are not currently required to do so. Hopefully this list will help alleviate some of the confusion in the meantime.

As a side note: Sassy does not offer any pacifiers that are BPA free. All of their pacifier shields and keepers contain BPA.

That is great news! I wish the pacifiers were safer, but my children have always turned them down anyway.
If manufacturers did label them as safe, I think it would be a big selling point for them.

    Hi Christy,

Thanks! That’s what Sassy has told me also. The person I spoke with said they phased out phthalates a while back, which is great.

We do need to keep in mind that because a product is phthalate free, does not mean it is bisphenol-a free. Phthalates are typically (but not always ) used in items containing PVC, such as teethers and toys.

Thanks again for pointing that out to our readers. And yes – you can definitely link to the article :)

How bad is it to have bpa in pacifiers? I ask because my kids will not take any pacifiers other than Avent or Mams because of the symmetrical nipple. I’ve tried all the all-silicone ones and the nuks and the playtex ones and they hate them. So I’m using Mams classic pacifiers because the shields are a bit pliable so I think maybe there is less bpa than the hard ones. I have no idea if that’s true, or even how much bpa they might get from the shields. They are against their lips, but not in their mouths… anyone have a thought about this? We’ve replaced all our sippy cups and dishes and toys that have bpa or pvc in them, so this is our only remaining “bad plastic” issue. thanks so much.

I see the Teach Me Toothbrush Set, but is there a recommendation for non toxic finger infant toothbrushes for baby’s gums?

    @Monique:

That’s a great question! I did a quick search and found one called the Soft Finger Toothbrush by Luvable Friends. It’s listed by Amazon.com as being made from medical grade silicone and PVC free. They’re out of stock, but I found it here.

I’ll keep searching for more options and I’ll let you know what I find.

Does it really matter if the shield contains bpa? I thought the leaching was a problem only if there is a hot liquid inside to ingest. Also, the soothies are scented…is there a chemical in them to make them taste like vanilla? I am wary of that. My daughter only likes the mam silicone nipple pacifiers. I have been trying other kinds. I am just wondering if I should even worry about it since the shield isn’t in her mouth, anyway.

Thanks for all of this great information! Do you know whether the Sassy bumble bites teether has BPA? It looks a lot like the Buzz n bites teether, but it’s not listed. Thanks again!

    Hi Debbie,

Thank you for contacting us! We haven’t done our own research on the Bumble Bites teether yet. We did find some info from a reader of the ZRecs.com blog:

“I wrote Sassy and asked them about their Coolin Teethers and bumble bites buzz. Here is their response. We mainly use cloth ones, but I wanted a few plastic ones that I knew were BPA free

    From: Judith Minix jminix@sassybaby.com

    Subject: Re: materials

Thank you for your email. The Bumble Bites, Buzz & Bite and Coolin Teethers are BPA-free. Be assured we only use safe non-toxic materials. The safety of the children using or playing with our products is our primary concern, and all of our products meet and exceed all government safety standards set by the (CPSC) Consumer Product Safety Commission and (ASTM) American Society For Testing & Materials. Best Regards, Judy Minix/Sassy/MAM Consumer Relations.”

It sounds like the Bumble Bites teether is also BPA free, but if you’re unsure, you may still want to contact the company yourself.

    Hope that helps,

    Alicia

@Carolyn: BPA leaching has recently been shown to take place with normal, everyday use. It turns out that hot liquid may not be required to cause the already unstable BPA bond to break down and leach out.

As far as whether you really need to worry about BPA in pacifiers, it really has to be to your own discretion. I have personally chosen to avoid pacifiers containing BPA, because my kids lips are in constant contact. They also use the pacifier for a teether – chewing on the shield.

That’s a great question regarding scented Soothies. Not all Soothies are scented, but it does lend to the question of whether it’s toxic or not. We’ll delve into that and post what we find out in the near future. There are several other scented teethers that could be included in this category of research.

Thank you for all of the helpful information! The one thing that I have still not been able to find is a regular Bisphenol-a, Phthaltate and PVC free drinking cup. I want one that is not a straw or a sippie cup, and my kids aren’t quite ready for a glass. Do you know of anyone that makes any? Thank you!

    Mollie,

We’ve been in the hunt for some time and have only come across two brands so far for older kids. The most accessible is IKEA Rainbow Cups and Utensils, as noted by Kathy at Safemama.com. The second is a line of dishware by Steady Co. They’re located in the UK, but you can find their Steady Cup at onestepahead.com.

We’ll let you know when we come across more options,

I just emailed sassy (thanks for the link!) because I have 5 toys (came in a set) from them and I saw that one of them was on Z Recommends list as having BPA for sure. The circle rattle. I’ll let you know what they say back to me… but it sounds like from that generic email I might not get much.

    Help!

I have an older set of nesting snack cups that are similar to the Perfect Size Snack Cups. I bought them a couple years ago and put them away and forgot about them. Unfortunately, I didn’t put the packaging in :( I’m pretty sure they are Sassy and I know I bought them at Babies R’ Us, but I can’t find out any information about the plastic. There’s nothing listed on the cups themselves. I’m sure I should just get rid of them, but hoping for help.

There are 4 bowls (small) and they nest (I have 8 total, but I think I purchased 2 sets). The colors are red, orange, blue and purple (opaque) and all of the lids are green. 3 of the 4 lids are the snack lid (hinge in the middle) and the smallest is not. All of the lids have relief shapes on them: square, circle and rectangle. The bowls have relief designs–two have small cat faces on the side, the other two have dogs on the side.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I just bought the feeding plate set for my son… but on the bottom of each plate is a set of numbers, in the middle is an “07″ – which I would guess means this is a #7 plastic – doesn’t that contain BPA? I looked at the bottom of the feeding bowl set also from Sassy and those were labeled “05″ – so BPA free. The plastics in the two different sets look different too. The plates are opaque whereas the bowls are translucent (which is how the plates in your photo here look, too – mine look different). Did they perhaps change over the plastics used in the plates at some point? I bought mine at Babies R Us just this weekend.

    Thanks for your help.

    Rose,

The numbers you are looking at are the manufacturers code, not the recycling code. Many times it represents the year they are made or the design updated by the company.

The recycling numbers are always found within the three chasing arrows and they won’t have a zero before them.

Hopefully that helps clear it up a little,

Does it matter which year the Sassy products were produced? I just bought Sassy products today from Babies R Us and the bottoms of the products say 1999 (spoons), 2000 (the bowls and more spoons). Were they bpa-free back then?
    Thanks!

I have a feeding bowl I believe is from Sassy. Its green and has a rubber thumb grip on it. It has a lid that has a steam hole in it. It came with a spoon as well. I am wondering if this is BPA free.

Sassy makes so many products that it’s hard to know by with a worded description. Why don’t you email me a picture of the bowl/spoon at info@thesoftlanding.com and I’ll see what I can find out for you.
