Update on Sassy MAM Pacifiers

UPDATED 1/18/09

We’ve been bombarded lately with questions from parents who contacted Sassy and have been given varying answers to the age old question, “Which Sassy pacifiers are BPA free?”

We received a comment today from a frantic parent needing to know the final word:

I emailed MAM again for more clarity. Here’s what they list as BPA free.

I can assure you that the MAM Nanno, Soft Rim, Ulti, and Mini-Ulti are BPA free. The other ones that would fall under these would be the MAM trends, Pearl, Mini-Pearl, Precious Gems Mini Ulti, Mini Night, Mini Sayings Collection, Symbols Collection, Mini Spanish Collection, Crystal Collection, Sport Ulti, Diamond Collection, Night Ulti glow in the dark, Sayings collection, Stripes collection. These are all the ones that are under the Ulti or Mini Ulti. The Ulti just means it is for 6+ months the Mini-Ulti is for 0-6 months. It is just the size of the shield that changes with these two. The Nanno is for 0-2 months only and the Soft Rim is for 0-6 months and 6+ months.

Hope this helps!

SoftLanding people… please follow up with Mam again. You are telling people that they aren’t BPA free and they are. My son wasn’t picky with which brand of paci, but my daughter will only take MAM. I know there are other parents out there like me. They need to know MAM is ok now. Thanks!!!

We decided to take the same approach we always do and go straight to our wonderful Sassy rep for the most up-to-date info on the status of the pacifier saga.  Our rep went right to work and came back with the same confusing information our readers did (does the Gerber pacifier saga ring a bell?).

To make a long story short, Sassy Corporate Headquarters first responded with the very same statement we’ve based our Pacifier Quick Reference Guide on:

None of our MAM pacifiers or keepers are BPA Free. We are in the process of changing the materials, but they will not be ready until 4/1/09.

So, our rep pushed a little harder, sharing that our readers were being told by Sassy that some pacifiers are now BPA free.  Sassy Corporate HQ then clarified a little further:

It is a little confusing but as of today, the Nanno #5005/#50058 and Soft Rim Pacifiers are BPA free. All of the other pacifiers are/were made from polycarbonate which has BPA. MAM is transitioning the entire pacifier line to polypropylene shields that are BPA free. This changeover is happening over the next few months. However, this will be a running change and will not be indicated on the packaging.

While it’s fantastic that Sassy is responding by removing polycarbonate (BPA) from all pacifiers, the full transition hasn’t happened yet.  And since there’s really no way to tell which pacifiers are now BPA free – because they aren’t labeled as such, and because some stores will continue selling through their current stock of polycarbonate pacifiers – we recommend waiting for the final word that the pacifiers are all officially BPA free.

We’ll keep you updated as soon as we hear the all clear from Sassy :)

UPDATE 11/7/08: Our Sassy rep informed us that MAM will be officially seperating from Sassy by December 2008 to become their own independent company.  Our rep put us in contact with MAM so we could confirm their timeline for release of the new BPA free pacifier line.

MAM explained that some of their newly BPA free pacifiers are already shipping, but they’re not all labeled as such.  Their goal is to have all of the new line officially ready and labeled by the middle of December.  We’ll be adding them to our store and will notify you as soon as they arrive.

UPDATE 1/18/09: We contacted Sassy again and learned that MAM will be branching out on its own in 2009.  As MAM takes over, they are going through and adding labels to their currently BPA-free pacifier inventory.  We’ve heard that several Babies R Us store already have some of the BPA-free pacifiers and other retailers will have them in early Feb. 2009.

PLEASE NOTE: MAM has not yet redesigned the Classic or Air style pacifiers, so they DO contain BPA.  Be careful to purchase only pacifiers that are specifically labeled as BPA-free.

It is a shame Sassy is giving misleading information as they had told me Ulti were BPA free–fortunately I ordered the soft rims online and that is what actually is bpa free. Great article, thank you for the info

    Hi Molly,

This whole situation is definitely very frustrating! I honestly feel that Sassy isn’t trying to intentionally mislead us. In our experience with calling companies to find out what materials are used in their products, the reps are sometimes just confused as we are with all of the changes.

Sassy has been extremely open and honest with each and every ingredient they use in manufacturing. If a product has only 2% polycarbonate (BPA), they share that with us.

    Sincerely,

    Alicia

Does anyone know if the MAM Pacifier Keepers are BPA Free? I have one of the Crystal models (which is see-thru colored plastic, so I’m guessing it’s polycarbonate plastic) but I also just bought a 2-pack made of opaque blue plastic. I don’t ever recall seeing this opaque version before – is it their new BPA free version??? Thanks for any insight you can provide! Also – thanks for all your diligent work in keeping all of us parents informed on the latest news & changes! It is so much appreciated!!!!

    Christy,

The MAM Pacifier Keepers are made with polycarbonate, so they do contain BPA at this time.

You can find our current list of BPA free pacifiers here.

PS Thank you so much for the wonderful compliment!

Well, I threw away several months ago the “crystal collection” of the sassy mam’s but when I recently called them they assured me 100% that the crystal collection was safe. The pacifier I switched to gave my baby a rash on her face so I did some homework to see if I could switch back to the sassy’s and as per what they assured me, I could so. They are sending me some free crystal pacifiers. I’m just sick of this back and forth stuff. I know the nipple is silicone so is it really going to matter that the face plate is polycarbonate because they don’t suck on that? I mean their lips might touch the rim but will they absorb that much that it will hurt them until sassy’s new line comes out? I really have to get rid of her face rash from the gerber brand and the crystal line allowed her face to breathe. If anyone knows, I would appreciate an answer ASAP. Thanks, Rose Anderson

For those of you whose babies/tots are really attached to their Sassy MAM pacifiers, I had REALLY good luck switching a MAM paci user to the Gerber NUK Original. If you do a side-to-side comparison, the nipples are quite similar except for the identation on the nipple’s top side of the NUK. My 16-month-old compensated by using her new NUK paci upside down. But an upside-down paci is better than a BPA paci any day.

My child who is currently 8 months has used mam pacifiers since she was about 2 months had been sticking about half the pacifier in her mouth and would push it back out and while visiting my mom we all sat and watched her with it and she put the ENTIRE PACIFIER IN HER MOUTH so i had to throw them away. . . It was scary seeing that because she could of done while in her crib or when someone wasnt looking so just a heads up to everyone these are small enough to fit in your babies mouth if they figure out they can do it…

SoftLanding should start a movement amongst the parents, asking manufacturers to put little icons on their packaging, like little circles or squares with a slash through them, for each potentially damaging chemical, like BPA, PVC, Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Arsenic.

I think, with SoftLanding's good standing in the parenting community, they'd be the perfect vanguard to start this movement.

I found this thread searching for BPA-info and I saw all those questions and confusing answers flying around here. I’m not responsible for consumer service at MAM. But seeing this, I just feel I have to put some things straight here. Honestly, I couldn’t sleep well myself if I would have to worry about a product my baby puts in his mouth. So please excuse that my answers aren’t phrased so nicely like you would get it from customer service in the US.
I’m a material scientist and know MAM and its team since many years. (I actually remember when I studied material science some 10 years back, MAM was used as THE benchmark example in my class. And they got even better since then.) And since last year I work for them.
(Of course, if you want to know more you can always visit MAMs homepage at http://www.mambaby.com or contact the customer service.)

So first of all, all MAM pacifiers comply with or exceed and ALWAYS complied with or exceeded the CPSIA-standards that took effect last year and even with those that will take effect next year. On the COCs (found in master cartons ore online at mamcoc.com) you'll see that they comply with:
    16 CFR 1500 Mechanical Hazards
16 CFR 1511 requirements for pacifiers
16 CFR 1500.44 flamability of solids
    16 CFR 1303 ban of lead-containing paint (< 90 ppm)
CPSIA Sec.101: general lead ban – lead in substrate (< 100 ppm)
    16 CFR 1500.52(c) bite test
CPSIA Sec.108 & CA Bill 1108: ban on phthalates
(DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIDP, DnOP < 0,1%)

MAM never used PVC for any of its products.
There is none of the other hazardous elements that were mentioned above in MAM pacifiers (technically correct: below detectable amount).
The MAM bottles are BPA-free ever since. They came to the US-market some 5 years ago. So WAY before the competition! (And you probably paid 15 bugs for a born free bottle, right? :) ) Why did MAM knew it YEARS before everybody else? Because MAM has its network of doctors, scientists, nurses, midwifes, pediatricians, child development experts, speech therapists and other medical experts and their own plastic engineers, chemists and material scientists (like me) that know their business. (And yes, I’m proud to work for a company that cares so much about what they do.) You can find the bottles online and at Toys or Babys R Us, Burlington, Publix, …
Some of MAMs pacifiers are BPA-free ever since (Soft, Nanno, Start) all others were changed starting 2007. So by now you will only find PC left overs in the market. BPA-free is only called out on the packaging since late last year when MAM slowly changed to the new white layout. And actually: Don't worry too much about BPA in pacifiers, because with a pacifier your baby doesn't drink the liquid you cooked the PC in. BPA is really a BOTTLE ISSUE and MAMs bottles were always BPA-free. That’s also why the upcoming legislations are targeting bottles and not pacifiers.
And one more BIG plus: MAM pacifiers are made in Europe and not in China.

And what’s the MAM-Sassy story all about? Well, MAM is an Austrian baby products manufacturer. It was distributed in the US by Sassy for 25 years. Now MAM opened up its own distribution company in the US. And look out, soon you’ll find many more MAM products on the market that where only available in Europe so far!

If your baby manages to get the whole pacifier in his or her mouth, first of all DON'T panic! If you panic and hectically pull out the pacifier you can injure your baby! The MAM pacifiers have many and big holes in the shield to let air through in such cases. So if your baby can’t take the pacifier out on his/her own, stay calm and carefully pull it out.

I hope I could provide you with enough information here that you can be sure that MAM products are safe and of best quality. And my colleagues and I will make sure that it stays like that. You and your baby, have a great day!
