While we’re well-known for our Safer Plastic Guides, we actually receive more questions about  products made from stainless steel.   We also happen to be water bottle addicts and since we’ve tried almost every bottle available to mankind, we thought it would be helpful to share our personal favorites with you.  We’ve listed them in order of most favorite to almost favorite :)

What About Aluminum?

Read more here about SIGG, the largest producer of aluminum bottles and then jump over to Tree Hugger for more info on Laken.  Dang, these used car salesman tactics are really getting tiring.  While their bottles do not us a BPA-based epoxy lining currently, we haven’t heard positive reports on SIGG’s new EcoCare lining (as far as durability).

Fact:  Aluminum food containers require a lining, where stainless steel containers do not. You don’t have to wonder if you’ll find out 2 years after you started using your stainless steel water bottle that – oops! – it did have BPA in the lining – but the manufacturer just “didn’t know.”

    I have to throw my support behind the Kleen Kanteen. It was my original “safe” water bottle and has proven why it should be my only water bottle. I won a Thinksport bottle and was very excited to try it, but it constantly leaks. I emailed the company asking for tips to make it stop leaking, but its been several weeks and I haven’t heard back. Disappoiinted with the bottle and customer service. My Kleen Kanteen does well holding temperatures with a Built NY bottle cover. Try it.

I prefer the “narrow” mouth design and I was able to put slim ice cubes my refrigerator produces. The company is committed to philanthropy so every bottle sold, a portion goes to a good cause.

      I used to have one of these stainless steel caps, and water gets inside the cap and won’t come out — which I think will lead to all kinds of bacteria growing inside of it! Yuck! I had contacted a couple of the other bottle companies listed here and they both said that they stopped selling them because of this same problem. Their regular caps are made of polypropylene #5 which is bpa free.

    I would caution anyone ordering the EcoCanteen bottles. I’m still waiting for mine, so I don’t know if they are a good product or not. However, the website and commercials are deceptive. They advertise all of these extras as ‘free’, but they charge you shipping on each individual thing they send, including the cloth holders. Basically, 20 dollars of products ends up costing 50 bucks, and they ask for your credit card info but they don’t tell the total price until after they charge you.

    Nikto- A stainless steel bottle which lasts for 10 years is better than throwing out water bottles. The ideal is of course, no container and straight from a bubbler. However, most bubblers have been taken down,my high school for 600 students has 3, and one is at a lower height for disabled people. Dehydration is a serious issue. Al bottles tend to dent easily, requring them to be disposed of eventually. Steel is not ideal, but at least we can recycle all types of steel. We can't do that with all plastics. Steel doesn't leach much either.(Under highly acidic conditions(Not normal for drinking), it can leach some iron, or in the case of Kleen Kanteen, Cobalt and Ni I think, along with iron. Glass is pretty much the only thing that NEVER leaches, but it is breakable.) They are not totally eco friendly, but they are certainly not as horrid as plastics are. Terra cotta would be another good option. Though those do require heat and that requires electricity(same with all of the options), so we should look for companies that use solar power and other renewable sources. Kleen Kanteen does not.

    A much newer stainless steel bottle on the market called Hydrasip is an excellent choice. We personally like the double wall insulated bottle.     1. Where are your bottles made? If in China, how do you monitor production quality and ensure appropriate working conditions and wages for factory workers?
    2. Do you visit the factory to oversee production periodically?
    3. Do any plastic parts contain BPA?
    4. How often do you have your bottles third party tested for lead (especially the painted ones)?
    5. What makes your bottles unique and a better choice than the many other stainless steel bottles on the market?

    I became a fan of Kleen Kanteen about a year ago because they make stainless steel sippy cups for children. (Plastic parts are BPA-free.) I don't know whether more companies now offer them – and it turned out that our toddler prefers a regular cup anyway – but we've been happy with Kleen Kanteen otherwise.

I have come to love both of these companies for design and functionality- my vote does go to Klean for a bottle with no liner and what i believe to be the best sport top on the market-

    How is the Kor Vida not part of this collection.  Most of these are thermos builds and not actual water bottles.  This should be re-titled best double wall steel thermos.  But it also allows you to make a new post for best single wall steel water bottles :)
