EWG Names the Top Ten Safest Sunscreens for 2008

I feel like I’ve been running around in circles trying to decide which sunscreen will protect us from cancer, not promote it.  We’re planning our vacation and will be spending most days boating on the water, so we’ll need that extra help fighting off sunburn.  I really thought I had my act together when I made a “quick” run to the store.  I ended up leaving empty-handed and thinking, “It can’t be that hard, can it?”

I walked in the door and went straight to my most trusted resources, hoping for some help.  Thank goodness for EWG’s Sunscreen Guide!  Not only do they recommend the top ten products, they also rank the top ten overall brands, and even provide great tips for avoiding sunburn.  They didn’t just focus on the more notably organic brands either – Walgreens Zinc Oxide for Face Nose and Ears is right there at number ten!

EWG’s Sunscreen Guide is also available in a printable guide.  Before making your final decision, be sure to take a look at Safe Mama’s safer sunscreen review too.  I don’t know about you, but my life just got a whole lot easier.

The sunscreen guide is a great find. I thought that it was cut and dry when choosing a sunscreen, but it is more complicated than I thought. I even saw a report on 20/20 last night about what to look for in a sunscreen.

It’s quite important that people do their homework on safe sunscreens. Not only as to what the ingredients are, but how will it effect your skin, what about when it soaks into your body, and also what sort of environmental footprint will it leave when it washes off? Soléo Organics All Natural Sunscreen was one of the most highest ranked sunscreens on the EWG report, and it is also biodegradable and only uses zinc oxide (remember, zinc is an essential mineral for us to survive, unlike titanium dioxide!).
