Drowning in Bottled Water

World Water Week 2010

In honor of  World Water Week, we’re taking a moment to focus on America’s absurd overuse of disposable bottled water in the name of convenience and supposed better health.   As Food and Water Watch points out, bottled water is not safer than tap water, it creates mountains of garbage and causes other major environmental problems, it’s thousands of times more expensive than tap water and companies mislead communities into giving away their public water in exchange for dangerous jobs.

Tapped the Movie brings the shocking nature of our mislead use of bottled water into focus.  Take a look at the video below for some extremely motivating reasons to start making changes in the way you consume water.

Start Making a Difference Today

1) Reduce your bottled water use!  Take the pledge to only use bottled water when absolutely necessary.

2) Become a fan of Get Off the Bottle on Facebook.

3) Buy local!! Industrial agriculture is one of the leading causes of water pollution in the United States today – so support your local farms!

4) Plan ahead for trips away from home.  Always bring a reusable water bottle along (we have many choices) rather than buying bottled water. Production, transportation, and disposal of bottled water consume large quantities of water (and energy).  You’ll also be reducing your risk of exposure to BPA!

5) Invest in a water filter and save yourself a nice chunk of money in the long run.

6) Learn about the sheer number of disposable water bottles consumed by Americans each year in Kid Basix article “ReThink Plastic”.

7) Support UNICEF’s Tap Project which funds water, sanitation and hygiene programs and will help to bring clean and accessible water to millions of children around the world, including those in Togo, Central African Republic, Vietnam, Guatemala and Haiti.
