Are FoodSaver and Seal-a-Meal Bags Safe?

Today we’re tackling another great suggestion submitted by one of our readers:  what type of plastic are FoodSaver and Seal-a-Meal vacuum bags made from and is it safe?

We spoke with Jarden Consumer Solutions, who happens to make both products, and confirmed that all of their 5 ply vacuum bags are made from poly nylon plastic.  They explained that the bags are a polyethylene/nylon blend and all  bags are BPA-free.   And they are made without PVC and phthalates as well.  This is great news for folks who buy their food in bulk and freeze extras for future use!

    You're all very welcome! It was a surprisingly easy task to accomplish. Even though the product materials aren't listed on their website, Jarden didn't beat around the bush about what type of plastic they used in their vacuum bags. It was a very pleasant phone call!

    I am so glad to hear this report, as well! I have been selling Foodsaver bags for over 5 years now and I have not heard of any issues. For those of you who love them (like I do!)     I'm happy to hear (well, read) this since I own a Seal-a-Meal… :-) This being said, it only concerns the bags. The Seal-a-meal system also has containers that you vaccuum seal and I'm wondering what those are made of… I stopped using them just because…. ;-)
    I wish someone would also come up with an eco-friendly zip freezer bag already…

    Natural Value re-closeable sandwich bags. No PVCs or plasticizers in any Natural Value plastic products.

    I'm not sure if they do freeezer bags as robust as the ziplok, but they are definitely just fine and free of all the bad stuff. Recycled boxes too!

    That’s good to know that they are not supposed to contain BPA, PVC, and phalates, however, they are Made in China! I don’t trust any products made in China. China is known to take shortcuts in the manufacturing process if they can get away with it. If they can put melamine in baby’s milk, then when they were caught with lead in children’s toys, they substituted cadmium, a much more toxic chemical, think what else they can do for other things.

    You have to watch where you buy. Some of the bags are made in Canada. Just check the box!

    I’m trying to make a decision about whether to use this product. What about the fact that the method is heat sealing? It seems like melting plastic would leach into the stored food.

    thank you so much! I am new to this Vacuum-seal thing but been loving it! I have been preparing all kinds of things from freshly sliced carrots in boil-and-bag situations to Beef Jerky! It is nice to know you can seal your veggies with a bit of butter/spices-of-choice and freeze them sealed and then drop them into a pot of boiling water and serve with exploding flavors! LOVE IT!
